    How to Close Your Account

Learn how to permanently close your DNScale account, what happens to your data, and how to resolve outstanding invoices before closing.

    What you'll learn

    • Close your DNScale account from the dashboard settings page
    • Understand what happens to zones, records, API keys, and billing when you close
    • Resolve outstanding invoices that block account closure
    • Know what to do if you change your mind or need to recover data

Closing your DNScale account permanently removes your access to the platform and disables all your DNS zones. This action cannot be undone. Before you proceed, make sure you have migrated your DNS to another provider and resolved any outstanding invoices.

    Before You Close

Take a moment to review this checklist before closing your account:

    • Migrate your DNS first. Update the NS records at your domain registrar to point to your new DNS provider. If you close your account while your domains still point to DNScale nameservers, those domains will stop resolving. See Domain Registrar vs DNS Hosting for background on how nameserver delegation works.
    • Export your zone data. If you need a copy of your DNS records, export your zones before closing. Once the account is closed, your zone data is no longer accessible.
    • Resolve outstanding invoices. You cannot close your account while you have unpaid invoices. See the section below for details.
    • Notify your team. If you use multi-user accounts, all team members will lose access immediately when the account is closed. Their API keys will stop working.
    • Revoke external integrations. If you use the DNScale API with Terraform, DNSControl, or other automation tools, remove the DNScale provider configuration before closing to avoid errors in your pipelines.

    Outstanding Invoices

DNScale requires all invoices to be paid before you can close your account. This protects both you and us from billing disputes after closure.

An invoice is considered outstanding if its status is open (awaiting payment) or payment failed (a charge attempt was declined). You can check your invoice status in Settings under the Billing History section.

You cannot close your account while invoices are unpaid. The account closure dialog will show you a list of outstanding invoices and block the action until they are resolved.

    How to Resolve Outstanding Invoices

    • Update your payment method. If a payment failed due to an expired or declined card, update your payment method and the next automatic retry will settle the invoice.
    • Wait for automatic retry. Stripe retries failed payments automatically over several days. Once the payment succeeds, the invoice status updates to paid.
    • Contact support. If you believe an invoice is incorrect or need help resolving a payment issue, reach out on the Support page.

    How to Close Your Account

    1. Sign in to your DNScale dashboard.
    2. Go to Settings from the sidebar.
    3. Scroll down to the Danger Zone section at the bottom of the page.
    4. Click the Close Account button.
    5. A dialog will open and automatically check your account status. If you have outstanding invoices, you will see them listed and the closure will be blocked.
    6. If your account is clear, you will see a confirmation prompt. Type DELETE in the text field to confirm.
    7. Click Close My Account.
    8. Your account will be closed immediately. You will be signed out and redirected to the home page.

    What Happens When You Close

When you confirm account closure, the following actions happen immediately:

    • Subscription cancelled. Your active subscription is cancelled. No further charges will be made.
    • DNS zones disabled. All your DNS zones are removed from the anycast network. Queries for your domains will no longer receive answers from DNScale nameservers.
    • API keys revoked. All API keys associated with your account are permanently invalidated. Any automation relying on these keys will receive authentication errors.
    • Team invitations expired. Any pending team invitations are cancelled.
    • Billing account removed. Your Stripe customer record is deleted. No future invoices will be generated.
    • Account data removed. Your account record is marked as closed. Account data is retained briefly for billing compliance purposes and then permanently purged.

    Can I Reopen My Account?

No. Account closure is permanent and cannot be reversed. If you close your account and later want to use DNScale again, you will need to create a new account, set up a new subscription, and recreate your DNS zones and records from scratch.

If you are unsure whether you want to close permanently, consider cancelling your subscription instead. Cancelling your subscription stops future charges and disables your zones at the end of the current billing period, but keeps your account intact so you can resubscribe later.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to my DNS if I close my account?

Your DNS zones are immediately disabled on the DNScale anycast network. If your domains still have DNScale nameservers configured at your registrar, those domains will stop resolving. Always update your NS records at the registrar before closing your account.

Can I close my account if I am on the free plan?

Yes. Free plan accounts have no payment method or invoices, so the outstanding invoice check passes automatically. The closure process is the same.

I closed my account by mistake. Can it be restored?

Contact support immediately on the Support page. While account closure is designed to be permanent, our team may be able to assist if you reach out quickly. There is no guarantee of recovery.

Will I still be charged after closing?

No. Your subscription is cancelled and your Stripe billing record is deleted as part of the closure process. You will not receive any further invoices.

What if I have team members on my account?

All team members lose access immediately when the account is closed. Their individual user accounts are removed and their API keys stop working. Notify your team before closing.

Can a non-admin user close the account?

No. Only account admins can close the account. Standard users will receive a "Forbidden" error if they attempt to access the account closure option. If you need to close the account and are not an admin, ask an admin on your team to do it.
