WHOIS lookup
Look up domain registration details — registrar, expiry date, nameservers, and status codes — straight from the registry.
Frequently asked
What does WHOIS tell me about a domain?
WHOIS returns the public registration record: registrar name, creation/expiry dates, last update date, nameservers, domain status codes (like clientTransferProhibited, serverDeleteProhibited), and in some cases the registrant organization/name.
Why are some fields blank?
GDPR and ICANN's Temporary Specification (in effect since 2018) require registrars to redact personal data — registrant name, email, phone, and address are hidden for most domains in the EU and many elsewhere. You'll typically see the registrant organization (for businesses) but not individual names.
What do domain status codes mean?
Common codes: clientTransferProhibited (domain is locked against transfers), serverDeleteProhibited (registry prevents deletion), clientUpdateProhibited (changes blocked). 'client' codes are set by the registrar; 'server' codes are set by the registry.
Why should I check WHOIS for my own domain?
Verify the expiry date (set auto-renew!), check nameservers match your DNS provider, confirm the registrar hasn't changed, and watch for unexpected status codes that might indicate a lock or deletion in progress. Run a WHOIS check before any domain transfer.
